TRYING OUT: KAT VON D BEAUTY

2016 was a turd of a year, let's be honest, but for me one tiny glimmer of joy was the arrival of Kat Von D makeup in the UK. I've been drooling over her products for yonks but the various shipping/customs fees always put me off ordering from the US so I was very excited when I found out I could finally get Kat Von D makeup in Debenhams.

The first thing on my wishlist was the Kat Von D Shade and Light Contour Palette. So many people rave about this so I had high hopes and I was not disappointed. The palette comes with three highlight and three contour shades, all matte, so there's something to suit pretty much every skin tone. Originally I wasn't sure if I'd get enough use out of all the shades but I've been pleasantly surprised. I use Sombre the most as my everyday contour shade: it's a medium, cool toned brown so is perfect for pale skin. Shadowplay is slightly warmer so I like to use it as a bronzer and I've even used the darkest shade, Subconcious, when I want to go for all-out glam, Ian Somerholder-esque cheekbones. As for the highlight shades, I use Lucid as an all over setting powder because it pretty much matches my skin tone and Lyric under my eyes. The only shade I can't make work is Levitation which is way too dark and comes up orange/peach on me. But 5/6 ain't bad. As for the formula, the quality of these powders is insane. They're soft, pigmented, blendable - I can't fault them. The only thing I'm not too keen on is the packaging. I love the design, it speaks to my lil emo soul, and there's a nice big mirror inside but cardboard packaging is never particularly sturdy and it gets grubby so easily. I think they've now realised a refillable version of this palette housed in plastic but unfortunately it's not available in the UK yet. I'm sure I'll manage.

The other product I was desperate to try was the Everlasting Liquid Lipstick. After almost forking over a ridiculous amount of money for every single shade I managed to restrain myself and settled on just two. Bow N Arrow is my perfect nude shade - pink never seems to work on my ruddy complexion so I always go for more brown tones and this one is spot on. I could happily wear this everyday. The other shade, Nosferatu, is a gorgeous, deep, blood-red. I've heard so many people say that these are the best liquid lipstick formulas and I have to agree. They are completely opaque in one thin swipe and dry down matte but they are so comfortable to wear - they literally feel like nothing on your lips. A few hours in they do start feeling a bit dry but I don't mind that because I don't think you'd be able to find a matte liquid lipstick that doesn't. And the staying power of these is insane. I'm yet to come across a meal that these won't stay put through.

Honestly, I think Kat Von D is already one of my favourite brands - the quality is incredible, the packaging is badass and everything is cruelty free. I can't wait to try EVERYTHING.

Thanks for reading, Lucy x
